The report "Education in Figures - Portugal 2019", published by the Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC), showed that between the school years 2008/09 and 2017/18 schools lost 427,163 pupils, with the number falling from 2,056,148 to 1,628,985.

The number of teachers dropped by 31,147, again with most of them in the later stages of school education.

In the remaining levels of education, the data in the report indicate that in 2008/09 there were 18,242 pre-school teachers, 34,361 in the 1st cycle (1st to 4th grades), 34,069 in the 2nd cycle (5th and 6th grades) and 91,325 in grades 7 to 12.

As regards educational establishments, the document showed that in 2017/18 there were 3,878 fewer public and private schools in Portugal than in 2007/08 (there were 12,347). The number of public schools fell from 9,764 to 5,836, while private schools increased from 2,583 to 2,633.
