Wine production in Portugal to fall 3%

Wine production in Portugal is expected to fall 3 percent in Portugal compared to the previous season and 2 percent compared to the average over the last five seasons, revealed the Institute of Vine and Wine (IVV).

According to the IVV forecasts, wine production is expected to decrease in the country by about 3 percent compared to the previous season, to a volume in the order of 6.3 million hectolitres, which corresponds to a drop of 2 percent compared to the average of the last five campaigns.

The regions of the Douro, Terras do Dão, Trás-os-Montes and Terras de Cister may be the most affected, with forecasts of production drop between 20 percent and 35 percent, says the IVV in a statement.

However, the situation is revered in the regions of Minho (+ 9 percent), Alentejo (+ 5 percent) and Lisbon (+ 5 percent).
