According to commander Belo Costa, who held a press conference this morning (Tuesday), the fire has been dominated across 90% of the area, however while there is no active front, the remaining 10% contains a number of “worrying hotspots”.

Costa stated that conditions to fight the fire are favourable this morning but that during th afternoon, rising temperatures, increasing wind speeds and falling humidity levels will make the operation more complicated.

According to Belo Costa the focus is now on “seizing good opportunities” during the morning in order to solve the situation of the “10% perimeter that needs to be consolidated to ensurte the resolution of the fire”.

The current fire hotspots are located in the northern part of the parish of Cardigos in the municipality of Mação and also in part of the municipality of Vila de Rei.

If the conditions worsen and personnel fail to combat this final 10% of the fire in god time then "less pleasant situations" could arise he explained.

"We will strive to combat the threat so that when the period of these components [rising temperature and wind] comes, we can already be ahead and can then proceed with cautious," he said.

According to Paula Neto, from INEM, the number of injuries has remained the same since the last press conference on Monday at 20:00, with 16 injured, one of them seriously, totalling 39 people assisted.

Asked about the news from Jornal de Notícias, which stated that INEM took about four hours to transport a victim to the Hospital de São José, Paula Neto said that the victim had "due care six minutes after the request for help. "

Due to the medical assessment and clinical situation of the victim who was severely injured, "it was considered that the best means of transport to maintain care and ensure patient stability would be helitransport," he said.

"There were some conditions relating to the flight and safety characteristics that made the helitransport not as fast as the initial assessment of the situation would be and the patient's arrival at the hospital was not so fast because of this." , he said.
