Yellow weather warning due to rain

Ten districts in mainland Portugal are now under yellow weather warning due to the forecast of heavy rain, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The districts in question are Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Lisbon, Portalegre, Setúbal, Évora, Beja and Faro, where periods of heavy rain are expected, which may be occasionally turn to hail and be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

According to the IPMA, the yellow warning will be in effect between 12pm and 6pm on 20 April.

The IPMA also issued a yellow warning to the districts of Coimbra, Leiria, Lisbon, Setúbal, Beja and Faro between 00:00 and 6pm on Tuesday, 21 April, because of rough seas, with forecasts of waves from the west / northwest with 4 to 5 metres.

The yellow warning is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.

The IPMA forecasts, in the northern region of the continent, generally cloudy skies, periods of generally light rain starting in the morning on the coast, gradually extending to the interior regions, temporarily moderate during the afternoon.

It is also foreseen light wind, temporarily moderate from the south quadrant during the day, possibility of formation of fog or morning fog in some places and small drop in maximum temperature in the interior regions.

In the central and southern regions, generally cloudy skies and periods of rain starting in the morning on the west coast are foreseen, extending to the remaining regions, and will sometimes be strong, gradually changing to showers, locally strong, and which may occasionally be hail and accompanied by thunderstorms and strong gusts.

The possibility of snowfall at the highest points of the Serra da Estrela is also expected from the end of the afternoon.

The forecast also points to a light to moderate wind from the west quadrant, turning to the south quadrant from the morning, and blowing temporarily strong on the coast and in the highlands, becoming generally weak on the coast north of Sines gradually from the mid-afternoon, and running to the west quadrant in the South.

The IPMA also provides for the possibility of forming fog or morning fog in some locations.

The minimum temperatures on the continent will vary between 5 degrees Celsius (in Guarda) and 12 (in Lisbon) and the maximum between 12 (in Guarda) and 19 (in Faro).
