“I would have to learn to live in a different way, seeing death as an imposing itinerant visitor but knowing that even if I’m dying, until I actually die, I’m still living”

At the age of thirty-six, the author Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.

He was about to complete a decade’s training as a neurosurgeon. The book explores the transition from being a doctor and helping others to becoming a patient who is dying. He is also thinking about fatherhood, and starting the journey with his wife.

All these elements make you question your life, the choices, what makes life worth living for and what it means to father a child when your life is nearing the end.

One day he was a doctor treating the dying, the next he was a patient struggling to live. We also get to understand his life as a DR, and how when he is diagnosed with cancer he still works and tries to live his life for as long as he can.

Sadly the author died while working on this book. This fact hits hard when you are reading his moving words. His words are his legacy and form a guide for everyone who reads them.

His wife Lucy wrote the epilogue and it’s moving and sad but gives you hope at the same time.

Dr Paul was a brave man, he wrote with honesty and his story will keep you engrossed.

This is a beautiful written and thought provoking book. Some parts are hard to get through but I suggest you read the entire book to fully grasp the intention of the author.
