A report by The Telegraph has highlighted the number of Russian speakers in Ukraine who are now deciding to switch to speaking more Ukrainian since the Russian invasion of their country and The Portugal News aims to be accessible to as many people as possible.

While Russian propaganda claims that the estimated 14 million Russian speakers in Ukraine are being persecuted the report by the paper state otherwise: “many of the women in the group said it was Mr. Putin's attacks which had put them off speaking their own first language and made them decide to speak more Ukrainian”.

The Telegraph states that: “The group is part of a wider trend. In the past decade, the proportion who say Russian is their first language has fallen sharply. The trend has appeared to speed up after the February invasion.

“A recent poll from the Ukrainian Institute found that only 16 percent of Ukrainians claimed Russian as their mother tongue compared with 40 percent in 2012”.
