According to data released by Pordata, and based on information from the 2021 Census, last year there were 5,970,677 homes in Portugal, 4,042 of which were improvised. In 2011, however, there were 6,612 makeshift houses and a total of 5,859,540 dwellings.

In addition, 12.1% of homes in Portugal are vacant, a number that compares with 12.5% recorded in 2011.

The data also reveal that, in 2021, 70% of the dwellings were occupied by the owner.
