Isabel Almeida Rodrigues defended that migration “is an opportunity” not only for those who leave in search of better living conditions and security but also for a welcoming country.

“In Portugal, contributions to Social Security, in 2022, have already exceeded one billion euros. This is a significant number and an important contribution to the sustainability of the system”, she said.

According to the Secretary of State, Portugal received in 2022 “seven times more migrants than in the previous seven years”, as a result of the war in Ukraine.

“It was not an easy year, there were many people coming in a short period of time, but Portugal was present and responded accordingly”, she added.

She also said that Portugal continues to receive migrants “almost every day” and defended that mobility “must be seen as a fundamental human right”.
