For the president of Turismo do Algarve, André Gomes, the 65 Green Key awards now granted “are concrete proof of the persistent work of our units in investing in good environmental practices, in a sector that is increasingly demanding and attentive to sustainability”, highlighting that the region “is committed to being a destination that respects the environment, values its natural resources and offers responsible experiences to its visitors.”

The presenting of these awards, promoted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and coordinated in Portugal by the Associação Bandeira Azul de Ambiente e Educação (ABAAE), recognises tourist establishments that meet strict criteria of environmental management, social responsibility and education for sustainability.

On the other hand, this year the Algarve reinforced its position as a beach destination of excellence, adding 238 distinctions that attest to the environmental quality, accessibility and safety of its bathing areas.

Among the main highlights of this year are the 91 Blue Flags awarded to the region – distributed across 85 beaches, 4 marinas and 2 ecotourism vessels – positioning the Algarve as the Portuguese region with the largest number of beaches distinguished by this international symbol of environmental quality. Albufeira leads the way nationally, with 26 Blue Flags, awarded to 25 beaches and the local marina.

In addition, 84 Algarve beaches were recognized with the Gold Quality award, given by the Quercus Association, which distinguishes the consistency of excellent bathing water quality. The concern with accessibility also stands out: this summer, 48 beaches are officially marked as Accessible Beaches by the “Accessible Beach – Beach for All!” program, providing suitable conditions for visitors with reduced mobility.

The commitment to environmental sustainability is further underlined by the awarding of the ZERO Pollution award to 14 beaches in the region – an exclusive distinction reserved for bathing areas that, over the last three bathing seasons, have not recorded any microbiological contamination.

The region's international visibility also continues to grow. The Algarve was distinguished, for the third time, as the “World's Best Beach Destination” at the World Travel Awards – the Oscars of Tourism – reinforcing the confidence of the industry and travellers in the quality of its tourism offering.

On an international level, Praia da Falésia, in Albufeira, continues to shine among the best beaches in the world. After being elected the World's Best Beach by TripAdvisor in 2024, in 2025 it occupies 5th place in the world and 2nd place in Europe.
