“This is an anchor project for the development of the west zone of Madeira and also for the Autonomous Region”, declared the president of the Madeiran executive (PSD/CDS), Miguel Albuquerque, in the presentation of the project.

Work on the golf course in the municipality of Calheta was started by Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Ponta do Oeste on 18 November 2009, and was suspended on 30 April 2012 due to financial difficulties.

In meetings held at the beginning of November, the island executive and Ponta Oeste agreed “April or May next year as the optimal date to restart the project”, indicated the regional secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Fino.

Miguel Albuquerque highlighted the “circumstance” of this golf course being “one of the most beautiful and iconic courses in the country and perhaps in Europe, which has unique characteristics”.

According to the Madeiran official, “this work is also of crucial importance from the point of view of strengthening and consecrating Madeira as a golf destination”.

Albuquerque highlighted that its location will make the “valuation of the west zone and Madeira more imminent, because the real estate part will create a set of added value from the economic point of view".

The island leader indicated that this will be “one of the most beautiful courses, which will be complemented with a set of attractions, a hotel with a unique view”, with the construction of a viewpoint next to the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse.

Pedro Fino stressed that “64% of the course is completed”.
