“The elements of the Maritime Police of the Regional Command of the Maritime Police of the South seized 20 bales of narcotics this morning, totalling around 1000 kg of hashish, during a patrolling action carried out in the south of Portugal, in the Algarve area”, according to a communiqué from the National Maritime Authority.

Speaking to Lusa, the commander of the Southern Maritime Zone and the Port Authority of Faro, Rui Santos Pereira, explained that the operation took place between 01:00 and 03:00 in the morning, with the traffickers' vessel escaping, after a chase some 20 miles off the south coast of the Algarve, between Lagos and Albufeira.

During the pursuit, the crew of the suspected vessel dropped the bundles of narcotics into the sea, which were later collected by members of the Maritime Police, with the support of a Speedboat Inspection (LFR) of the Portuguese Navy.

"A total of 20 drug bales were collected, with a total of around 1000 kg of hashish, which were then handed over to the Judiciary Police", concludes the statement.
