This week, the e-commerce holding company moved to a new location in the capital to position itself for its next national and international expansion strategy.
Joom has opened its office on Rua Alexandre Herculano, one of the city's main roads, becoming WeWork's neighbour with a 2,023 m2 space divided into two floors with work areas, meeting rooms, a kitchen with a private barista in the morning and an auditorium.
Joom – which has an online store where it contracts with merchants and sells to end consumers – will focus on technological development from Portugal, where it decided to move its headquarters in 2023. “We needed a place where people wanted to go,” the founder and CEO said at a press conference.
“Global trade is the world’s largest industry. We want to make it more technological. I believe that Portugal’s history of over 500 years in world trade, with the Discoveries, is still present. After the caravels, navigators, maps and astrolabes… Now qualified navigators are the talent. We chose Portugal for talent. These factors still play a role,” Ilya Shirokov told reporters.
Joom employs 400 people, 160 of whom are in Portugal, and is set to hire 50 more workers in the country by the end of this year.
