Founded on 7 July, OncoMira’s mission is to promote health, support cancer prevention and early detection, and provide guidance through treatment. According to Doroteia Ramos, president of the association, the goal is to build a human-centred support network that complements existing medical services.

“Although we have access to quality clinical care in Odemira, we identified a clear gap in emotional, social, and informational support for patients and families outside the hospital setting,” said Ramos. “We want to be an active force for change and solidarity, offering not only direct assistance but also promoting awareness and prevention.”

The association intends to offer psychological support sessions, both individual and group-based, for patients and caregivers, as well as create peer support groups for sharing experiences. Educational activities focused on health literacy and early diagnosis will also be key elements of OncoMira’s work.

In addition to its health-focused initiatives, OncoMira plans to launch volunteering programmes, including home and hospital visits, to help combat isolation and provide practical help. The group also plans to organise cultural and wellness activities aimed at enhancing self-esteem and improving quality of life.

Ramos emphasised that the association “gives voice to unmet needs” in the community and seeks to build a more supportive, informed and connected local network. Partnerships with local organisations and institutions are also in the pipeline, as OncoMira works to strengthen the social fabric around cancer care in Odemira.
