Figures from its debt support office said there was an increase in court seizures because of overdue debts and unexpected alterations to households, with children returning to their parents’ homes, coordinator Natália Nunes told Lusa News Agency.
“In 2015, the underlying causes behind the difficulties changed in Portuguese families. Traditionally, unemployment is the main cause – even though wage cuts was the main problem in 2014, but this year we have seen that unemployment and wage cuts represent 30 percent of the cases each. However, an increase in the size of the household as children return to their parents’ homes, has changed the situation”, she said.
Natália Nunes said she believed that when these children go back home, they lead to budget problems and commitments cannot be met.
