Mamamaratona is staged every year to raise awareness about cancer as well as promote a healthy lifestyle and raise funds for the association’s flagship project.
This year was the 15th time that the Mamamaratona was held and took place on Sunday morning along Portimão riverside.
The rain held off long enough for the thousands of participants to complete their routes of choice, which included an 8km walk/run, a 10km half-Mama-marathon, and a 21km marathon for the more serious partakers.
Participants of all shapes and ages flocked to the event, including some of the four-legged kind, to help boost funds for the association’s cause, Casa Flor das Dunas, a respite home for long-distance cancer patients undergoing treatment at Faro Hospital.
In a statement sent to The Portugal News the AOA acknowledged “the magnificent work done by all volunteers, who gave their time and their hearts for the cause, which is for all of us.”
The AOA said next year it hopes for an even greater number of participants, “as has happened every year”, and confirmed that next year’s Mamamaratona will take place on 9 October 2016.
