“In August 2023, the Eurozone unemployment rate was 6.4%, below the 6.5% recorded in July 2023 and the 6.7% recorded in August 2022. The European Union unemployment rate (EU) was 5.9% in August 2023, below the 6.0% recorded in July 2023 and the 6.1% recorded in August 2022,” according to Eurostat.

In comparison, unemployment in Portugal stood at 6.2%, below the 6.3% recorded in the previous month, but above the 6% recorded a year ago.

Even though Portugal recorded the lowest unemployment rate since October 2022, it was above the community average, Eurostat data shows. Compared to the eurozone, the Portuguese rate was lower.

Among the various European countries, Spain, with a rate of 11.5%, continues to be the Member State where unemployment is at the most serious level. Greece (10.9%), Estonia (7.6%) and Sweden (7.6%) are also highlighted. On the other side of the table, there are the Czech Republic (2.5%), Malta (2.7%), Poland (2.8%) and Germany (3%).
