Despite fighting for survival for weeks, the extent of the huge turtle’s injuries proved too much to overcome.
Zoomarine had been providing round-the-clock care to the large leatherback sea turtle since it washed up on a beach in Vila do Bispo at the end of July.
The turtle, the largest of all turtles, which can weigh up to 200 kilos, had been fighting for its life since being found severely wounded on Cordoama beach, with serious injuries including deep gashes to its head and eyes, fins and shell.
The park was hopeful that with permanent care and medication the large reptile would be able to make a full recovery and eventually be returned to the sea.
But, despite a brave battle by all involved, this was not to be and almost one month later, Odin, as the turtle had been named, succumbed to his injuries, tiredness and illness.
