Mr. Darville-Smith’s “tiddler” Albino Panga fish has now grown to what he says “resembles a small shark from Indonesia” and is fast outgrowing his surroundings.
“We’re trying to find a new home for him because he’s outgrowing our aquarium. Our tank is 400 litres but he needs a tank of around 1,000 litres or more,” explains Mr. Darville-Smith, who has lived near Loulé in the Algarve for over three decades, adding: “We would like him to have a better life so we are looking for someone who would care for him in a large tank”.
The Panga is a warm water fish and would not survive in outdoors ponds in cooler months.
“This SOS is just to help to give him a better quality of life. We are happy to give him away free to someone who cares for fish.”
Meanwhile, this case also begs the question of whether fish really grow to the size of their tanks, or whether it’s just an old fishwives’ tale.
Anyone interested in adopting the as-yet-to-be-named fish should email: kendarville-smith@gateway-net.co.uk.
New home needed for supersized Panga fish

Having kept fish for many years in the UK, including pangassius, I can assure readers that fish do not grow to the size of their tanks. A fish that is too large for an aquarium will become seriously stressed. If you get given such advice by a retailer, don't buy anything from them, not even food, they don't know what they are talking about, and shouldn't be in business. Please people, if you are a budding aquarist, get hold of a good book or three on the subject. Subscribe to a good magazine, speak to experienced aquarists.
