The number of road deaths is the lowest on record for the first six months of any year, but accidents have continued to rise in recent years.
The capital has seen this number rise by almost a thousand to just over 13,500, while fatalities were up by seven to 32, which is the highest in the country.
Road deaths in the Algarve have been halved to ten, but collisions are up by over 10 percent, in keeping with a trend of the past five years.
It doesn't matter up or down.. Both are going up and down at any time.

Portugal !...... To go straight on at a round-a-bout (rotunda) DO NOT indicate left then right to go straight on. DO NOT use the lane nearest the round-a-bout to go straight on, use the lane nearest the right kerb / pavement. We know you've only had cars for 20 years, but wise up to the correct and safe way to deal with round-a-bouts. DO NOT drive 2 metres from the rear of the car in front at 90 kph. DO NOT overtake on bends and corners when you do not have any view of the road ahead. DO NOT wander and weave from a straight line in to the hard shoulder or other (oncoming) lane because you are texting (SMS) on your phone. DO NOT change lanes on a motorway without actually looking for what is in the next lane....or even worse....force your way in to that lane because you believe you have the right to be there and the other vehicle will let you over. DO NOT drink alcohol at and think you are safe to drive because you are a big brave macho man.....you are most certainly not, you are worse than a child molester ............and........DO NOT THINK THE POLICE CAN NOT DETECT CANNABIS OR OTHER DRUGS., so you will be okay to drive. If you crash in to me because of any of these things, I will rip you a new hole to eat with. ~dash cam fitted. You are warned !!

"collisions up" - stop driving 1.5 m metres from the car in front. Stop overtaking on bends when there is no view ahead. Stop using your mobile / sms when you drive. In fact why can't you drive in a straight line?. Maybe because you are in fact texting. Drinking alcohol at 10:00 am and then again at 12:20 pm and 'driving' is not acceptable. Learn how to use round-abouts correctly. Learn to use the mirror for driving and not for make-up / hair adjustment. Why do you feel the need to overtake and then do exactly the same speed as the car you have just overtaken? We know cars are a new concept for Portugal but do get a grip, it's not a new type of mobile phone, it's a deadly weapon in the hands of 'macho-man'
