The pair of tourists were reportedly bowled over by rough waves and struggled to leave the sea as strong sea currents kept them from reaching the safety of the nearby shore. A lifeguard attempted to rescue them with a board but was unable to retrieve either of the bathers. They were eventually pulled out of the water by surfers, but were already unresponsive. Emergency medics and local firefighters, who rushed to the scene attempted to revive the pair, aged 47 and 50, for some time, but were ultimately unsuccessful in their attempts.
