Browns Health Club and Spa in Vilamoura will be starting weekly sessions on Tuesday 24 February at 10.30am and everyone, as long as they are over fifty years of age, is welcome to have a go.
Walking Football, is a non-contact slow-paced version of the beautiful game but players must keep their feet on the ground! Anyone who sprints, runs or jogs while the ball is in play will incur the displeasure of the referee and will be penalised with a free-kick awarded to the other team. The health benefits of Walking Football for this older age group are tremendous with improvement in the cardiovascular fitness, joint mobility, co-ordination and proprioception. There is less stress on the body as there is no sudden change of direction or cutting movements. The third generation astro-turf pitch is also kinder on knees and ankle joints.
The Soccer Olhanense Strollers will be staging an exhibition match at Browns at the inaugural session. You may never have played football before but don’t let that deter you from trying this new sport, everyone is welcome. Alan Brown, who founded the Health Club and Spa, is particularly keen to see the new sport take off. A year ago he underwent a triple heart bypass operation and valve replacement and attributes his speedy recovery to walking and sees Walking Football as the next progression.
“Come and try Walking Football. It’s the perfect game for the ‘forever young’ football players who want to continue enjoying the game without killing themselves!”
