Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has registered 2,040 deaths and 81,256 cases of infection, and 28,179 cases are now active, 611 more than on Tuesday.

The DGS indicates that of the eight deaths registered, five occurred in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, where the highest number of infections is also found, one in the North region, one in the centre and one in the Algarve.

As regards hospital admissions, the bulletin reveals that in the last 24 hours there have been a further 32 people admitted to wards. In the Intensive Care Units there has been no new admission since Tuesday.

In total, there are 764 patients admitted to wards and 104 to intensive care units, according to the epidemiological situation report of covid-19 in Portugal.

The bulletin also states that the health authorities have 46,023 contacts under surveillance, 414 less compared to Tuesday, and that 325 patients have been reported as recovered.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal in March, 51,037 people have recovered from the disease.

A further 494 new cases of infection have been reported in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, accounting for 41,225 cases and 811 deaths.

The North region now has 356 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection, totalling 29,469 and 900 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the Centre region there have been a further 58 cases, with 6,561 cases and 269 deaths.

In Alentejo there were eight more cases of infection, totalling 1,595 and 25 deaths.

The Algarve region has today reported a further 21 cases, totalling 1,862 cases of infection and 20 deaths.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores another case has been registered in the last 24 hours, totalling 287 infections and 15 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic.

In Madeira, six more cases were registered, accounting for 257 infections, with no record of deaths to date.

The confirmed cases are spread over all age groups, with the highest number of infections recorded between 29 and 49 years of age. The age group between 40 and 49 is the one with the highest number of infections.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 36,885 men and 44,371 women in Portugal, according to the reported cases.

Of the total number of deaths, 1,023 were men and 1,017 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

The Covid-19 pandemic has already caused about 1.5 million deaths and over 35.5 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a review by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 2,040 people died out of 81,256 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the centre of the pandemic in February, the American continent now has the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
