Covid-19: Portugal, daily update, 21 June

Portugal has today registered three deaths associated with covid-19, a slowdown in new cases of confirmed infections by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the last 24 hours, totalling 756, and a significant increase in hospital admissions.

The epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health indicates that there are now 38 more people in the hospital wards, now totalling 443, the highest number since April 19, the day on which 454 patients were hospitalised.

In the intensive care units there was no change, with the 97 patients referred on Sunday being maintained.

More than half of the new cases of infection (484) continue to be registered in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, where the three deaths were also verified.

The data released by the DGS also show that over 360 cases are active, for a total of 28,657, and that 393 people were reported as recovered in the last 24 hours, which increases the national total to 820,081 recovered.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, 17,068 people have died in Portugal and 865,806 cases of infection have been registered.

The number of contacts under surveillance by health authorities rose by 1,629, now totalling 40,519.

The incidence of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in mainland Portugal today exceeded 120 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the value for the entire territory is situated at 119.3, according to official data.

According to the joint epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), the 14-day incidence rate rose from 100.2 to 120.1 for Portugal continental and from 100.2 to 119.3 throughout the national territory.

Regarding the transferability index (Rt) the report reveals that it rose from 1.14 to 1.18 throughout the national territory and from 1.15 to 1.19 in mainland Portugal.

The transmissibility index and the 14-day incidence data are updated on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 484 new infections were reported, with 331,521 cases and 7,241 dead so far.

The Northern region now has 126 new infections by SARS-CoV-2, totalling 343,638 cases of infection and 5,361 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the Centre region, 28 more cases were registered, totalling 121,014 infections and 3,027 deaths.

In the Alentejo, 23 more cases were reported, totalling 30,653 infections and 972 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the Algarve region, today's bulletin reveals that 69 cases were registered, totalling 23,155 infections and 365 deaths.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has registered three cases, totalling 9,845 infections and 69 deaths due to covid-19 since March 2020.

The Azores now have 23 new cases and account for 5,980 cases and 33 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira publish their data daily, which may not coincide with the information published in the DGS bulletin.

Of the total number of fatalities, 8,957 were men and 8,111 women.

The greatest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.

Of the total deaths, 11,206 were people over 80 years old, 3,641 were aged between 70 and 79 years old, and 1,537 were between 60 and 69 years old.
