Covid-19: Portugal Update, 25 May

Portugal today recorded three deaths attributed to Covid-19 and 375 new cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, indicates the Directorate General of Health (DGS).

According to the epidemiological bulletin of the DGS, the number of patients admitted to infirmary reversed the trend and went down today to 237, two less than on Monday.

As for admissions to intensive care units, they also decreased and today 52 patients are hospitalised, five less than the day before.

The deaths occurred in the North, the Centre and the Azores.

As for new cases, of the 375 registered today by the DGS, the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region represents almost half of the total, with 175.

The data also shows that there continues to be a decrease in active cases of infection, now totalling 22,171, 297 less than on Monday.

In the last 24 hours, 669 more people were also reported recovered, bringing the total to 806,648 since the start of the pandemic.

Health authorities are keeping 19,851 contacts under surveillance, 263 more than on Monday.

According to the latest data from the DGS, Portugal has more than five million people vaccinated (5,009,910) against Covid-19, of which 1,552,920 are already immunised with the two doses.

The North region now has 103 new SARS-CoV-2 infections and one death with Covid-19, totalling 339,459 cases of infection and 5,354 deaths since the pandemic began.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, another 175 cases were reported, totalling 319,621 cases and 7,211 deaths attributed to Covid-19.

In the Centre region, in addition to one death, 19 more cases were reported, accumulating 119,572 infections and 3,021 deaths.

In Alentejo 20 more cases were reported, totalling 30,103 infections and 971 deaths.

In the Algarve region, the bulletin reveals that 11 more infections were registered, accumulating 22,172 cases and 363 deaths.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 21 new infections, accounting for 9,652 cases and 68 deaths due to Covid-19.

The Azores recorded one death and 26 new cases today, accounting for 5,261 cases and 33 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the DGS.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira release their data daily, which may not coincide with the information released in the DGS bulletin.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 461,242 women and 384,239 men in Portugal, DGS data show, according to which there are 359 cases of unknown gender, which are under investigation as this information is not provided automatically.

Of the total number of fatalities, 8,940 were men and 8,081 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated among the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.

As for the transmissibility index (Rt) of the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus continues to rise, standing at 1.06 on Monday, while the incidence of infection cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days increased to 55.6.
