The new authority will be responsible for regulating broadcasting and video-on-demand services in Ireland, as well as for introducing a new regulatory framework for online safety.

The regulator has come into existence after The Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022 was enacted in December of 2022. The new act will replace the Broadcasting Act 2009, dissolving the current regulator, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).

The launch was announced today by Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, who said: “I welcome the formal establishment of Coimisiún na Meán today. I have met with the incoming Executive Chairperson and Commissioners and know that they will form a dedicated and strong team."

“I look forward to working with them as we chart a new path for the regulation and development of the media sector in Ireland.”

Some of the key figures in the running of Coimisiún na Meán have already been appointed:

  • Jeremy Godfrey as Executive Chairperson;
  • Niamh Hodnett as Online Safety Commissioner;
  • Rónán Ó Domhnaill as Media Development Commissioner; and,

  • Celene Craig as Broadcasting Commissioner.
