“Cat Power sings Dylan ‘66” is the second show of this year’s edition of the Jardins do Marquês Festival, which begins on Saturday and runs until July 9 in the gardens of the Palácio do Marquês de Pombal, in Oeiras.
In May 1966, Bob Dylan performed live at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in Manchester, UK, giving a show that ended up becoming known as the Royal Albert Hall show, a London venue where Cat Power recreated the moment, song by song, in 2022.
In a telephone interview with Lusa, the singer recalled that she was on tour with the album “Covers” and wanted to finish in the United Kingdom, and the idea of performing on November 5 at the Royal Albert Hall came up.
“And I immediately thought ‘yes, but I want to make Bob Dylan’s album’”, she said.
Until then, Cat Power “had never played at the Royal Albert Hall”, but she was already there at the door, at the age of 23 and “imagined Bob Dylan leaving there”.
The singer and songwriter has loved Dylan “since she was little”, but at that time, “in her early 20s”, she was “madly in love” with the musician.
Sunday’s show in Oeiras “will be Cat Power’s last show,” dedicated to the album “Cat Power Sings Dylan '66.”
When she returns to the United States, she will “write and record,” with a view to a new album of new songs, which she hopes to release next year and which she has already been working on. About it, she can say that it will probably be like “Sun” (2012) and “Covers” (2022), “as far as orchestrations and writing are concerned.”
Jardins do Marquês begins on Saturday with the Jamaican band The Wailers, preceded by Kassav’, originally from Martinique and Guadeloupe, and the band B.Leza.
