On Monday, captain Cristina Girelli's stunning goal in the 70th minute seemed to spell Portugal's premature farewell, but in the final minutes, center-back Diana Gomes, in the 89th minute, went into the Italian box to equalize (1-1), keeping Portugal in the running for what they failed to achieve in 2017 and 2022.
However, the Portuguese team head into the final round of Group B depending on the outcome between the Spanish, who already qualified for the knockout stage with six points from a possible 1-1, and the Italians, who have four points and are in second place.
The Portuguese team, which lost 5-0 in its opening match against Spain, needs to beat the eliminated Belgium team, while Italy needs to lose to the Spanish and also make up for the deficit in goal difference (1-6 to Italy's 2-1).
What's certain is that if Spain and Italy draw, not even the most emphatic victory over Belgium will be enough for the Portuguese team.
The national team has only one point, in a group led by Spain, with six points and who have already qualified for the quarterfinals, followed by second-place Italy, with four points. Belgium, which lost 6-2 to Spain in the previous round, is bottom of the table with no points.
Portugal and Belgium face off on Friday in Sion, starting at 9:00 pm local time (8:00 pm in Lisbon), for the third and final round of Group B.
