In a statement, the Viseu Dão-Lafões Local Health Unit (ULSVDL) confirmed that the contract for the CAR building has been signed. The project is expected to cost around €16 million, plus VAT, and will be financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

“This investment responds directly to the long-standing requests of the local population and marks a significant step forward with construction expected to start next month,” the ULSVDL said.

The new centre will provide a dedicated Radiotherapy Unit and equip Day Hospitals with advanced physical and technological resources, ensuring high-quality care in oncology. Once operational, the facility will serve around half a million people in the region and could potentially extend services across the whole of Beira Interior, allowing patients to choose their preferred location for treatment.

The Local Health Unit emphasised that the new building will benefit both patients and caregivers by reducing travel time and discomfort, as well as associated costs. “This project has strategic importance, bridging gaps in service provision while enhancing the centre’s overall capabilities,” the statement added.

The project forms part of a broader investment plan for Viseu Hospital, announced in March by the Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, which included €30 million for a technical hub and radiotherapy centre, alongside an additional €7 million for medical equipment.

The radiotherapy centre has been a longstanding political promise, with previous plans stalled due to changing projects, amendments, and unsuccessful tenders. Political debate has continued over the years, with various parties highlighting delays even as the initiative passed through different government administrations.

A plaque marking the project’s launch has stood on the hospital grounds since 2017, symbolising the community’s long wait for this vital healthcare facility.
