Germany has launched a €100 million programme to address the 1.6 million tonnes of toxic World War II ammunition on the Baltic Sea floor, which is corroding and releasing pollutants such as mercury and lead into the marine environment.

This project involves sending divers to assess the condition of the munitions and surrounding areas to determine safe methods of removal.
Scientists have anticipated an increase in these pollutants, which could cause liver cancer in fish, oxidative stress in mussels, and a decrease in marine population diversity.
