Megalithic Sites can be found all over the world, and Portugal is no different in this regard, with the Megalithic Stone circle of Barreira being a great example.

The site appears to be forgotten and left by the wayside, and you have to enter by passing through an open gate and a thick forest. After a short walk, the first massive stones appear, with the biggest being about 4 metres tall!

It is truly puzzling to think about just how and why our ancestors decided to take up the trouble to move them, both in ancient, and modern times, as some of the key stones of this site were actually reused in modern times to aid in other regional construction projects.

Despite the area being identified and studied as a megalithic site in 1961, stones were removed in both 1975 and 1985…

Nowadays, especially in the mist that so often surrounds the area of Sintra, the site invites us to contemplate the passage of time.
