Visited mostly in the summer because of its proximity to beautiful beaches, Ferragudo also has a lot to offer during the autumn and winter months.
Due to its location, Ferragudo still has a strong connection to the sea. The river Arade, which flows into the sea between Portimão and Ferragudo, is a favourite base for many fishing boats.
Strolling through traditional streets
You can take a stroll through the steep, little streets observing the traditional architecture while getting a glimpse of local life, passing by the small traditional houses, even though a lot of them serve as guest houses now.
Rua Vasco de Gama is one of Ferragudo’s main streets, a typical Portuguese street with small houses covered in Portuguese tiles “azulejos” and colourful entrance doors. Along these streets, you can find “travessas”, narrow lanes often with many steps, connecting the main streets. Expect a bit of climbing, as the village is situated on a hillside.
During every season, roses, bougainvillaea and other vibrant blooms decorate the streets, adding colours and life to Ferragudo’s attractiveness.

A taste of Ferragudo
Ferragudo features an excellent gastronomy scene, especially if you are a fish lover. In recent years, several new restaurants have raised the game, offering a variety of dining options.
One of my personal favourites is Quiosque da Vila, located in the heart of the village. It’s a great place for a drink or a light meal. Their açai bowls are exceptional. Quiosque da Vila is located next to a well-maintained children’s playground with slides, swings, climbing frames and plenty of green space. If you have little ones, this is a must-visit spot.
Another playground is at Praia Grande, located at the beginning of the beach. After your kids enjoyed their play time, have lunch at Club Nau, a great place for families with outdoor seating, where children can play in the sand and run around. Don’t forget to bring some beach toys and you will be able to enjoy a drink in peace.
If you enjoy walking, it’s possible to walk from Praia Grande to the next beach, Praia do Molhe. You can take the steps located at the end of the beach and follow the path along the cliffs, enjoying breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The trail leads directly to the restaurant O Molhe at Praia do Molhe, which offers amazing views of Portimão marina and Praia da Rocha.
Another of my recommendations is the restaurant Portarade, located on the Ferragudo’s charming main square Praça Rainha Dona Leonor. This restaurant offers different menu options, you can choose if you want to have only a main course, a main course with dessert or a full lunch menu. Then simply choose any dish from the menu according to the option you selected. All dishes are priced the same. I have lunched here many times and their fresh fish options or salmon spaghetti are amazing, so you don’t need to worry, this is not a tourist trap!
The next spot on my list of favourites is near the Church of Our Lady of Conception. Walk to the small garden in front of the church, and you will find a viewpoint offering spectacular views of amazing Angrinha beach and the Castle of São João. The best time to come here is at sunset, when the light turns everything golden.

Did you know you can get a water taxi from Ferragudo to Portimão town? This is a great day trip idea and much more fun compared to a regular taxi. Thanks to its proximity to Portimão, you can easily enjoy the shops and experience a busier town atmosphere. If you are looking for an active way to spend the day, you can walk all the way from Ferragudo to “Ribeirinha”, a lively part of Portimão town. I do this walk sometimes over the weekend when I have more time. I walk to Ribeirinha in the morning, have lunch there and then walk back to Ferragudo, crossing the old Portimão bridge.
Traditional market
Every second Sunday of the month, Ferragudo hosts a traditional market. Sellers set up their tables with goods in the streets around the main square. It specialises in antiques, but you can buy anything you can think of, from vintage furniture and traditional products to jewellery, books and decorations. The market runs from 9am to 1pm and it’s full of both locals and tourists browsing for bargains or simply enjoying the atmosphere. If you are looking for unique buys, this is a great place to go.

Wellness and relaxation
In the yoga room of the cosy Hotel One2Seven, holistic events are held regularly, including yoga classes, workshops, retreats and sound healing therapies. The Soundful Yin Yoga sessions with sound vibrations that calm the nervous system and support emotional balance are a great way to slow down. They take place on Thursdays from 5.30pm to 7pm, you can find out more on the Facebook page Seaofsound.pt.
Another great way to spend long autumn evenings is to visit a spa and get some well-deserved rest. At Hotel Rural Bricia du Mar, you can make a booking at their Vida Sense Spa, which features three treatment rooms offering holistic treatments and therapies, as well as a sauna and steam room.
A village full of heart
Ferragudo is known for its picturesque places and friendly people, making it an ideal destination to experience the Algarve’s authentic charm, not only in summer but also through the autumn and winter months.
