Portugal ranks seventh in health spending in the European Union, with a spending rate of 10% of GDP, €29 billion.
According to Eurostat data for 2023, Germany (€528 billion), France (€325 billion), Italy (€179 billion) and Spain (€138 billion) are the countries with the highest healthcare spending.
In contrast, healthcare spending in 2023 represented less than 7.0% of GDP in four EU countries: Luxembourg, Romania (both at 5.7%), Hungary (6.4%) and Ireland (6.6%).
