In Vila Nova de Gaia, heavy rain caused a landslide early this morning, forcing the closure of National Road EN 222, the Sub-Regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection of the Porto Metropolitan Area reported.

The incident occurred at 4:33 am near the Inha River bridge and, fortunately, no injuries were reported. The road is closed in the Canedo/Lomba direction, between Canedo and Lavercos.

During the early hours of the morning, civil protection registered 399 weather-related incidents between midnight and 8:00 am, mostly in Greater Lisbon and the Western Region, but there were no casualties or evacuations, according to Elísio Pereira of Civil Protection.

Severe storms hit Portugal, causing hundreds of incidents and widespread road closures

Of the 399 incidents, 65 occurred in Greater Lisbon and 75 in the Western Region. These included:

  • 129 floods,
  • 119 fallen trees, and
  • 83 landslides or other mass movements.

“Many of the floods are caused by rivers and streams overflowing,” officials said. “Water levels are being closely monitored, and there are no indications of significant changes at this time.”

Roads and traffic affected

The storms continue to cause major disruptions, with traffic blocked on multiple roads, including:

  • A14 motorway (Coimbra–Figueira da Foz), in three sections,
  • Three stretches of Itinerários Complementares (IC),
  • 77 national roads and 66 municipal roads.

According to the GNR (National Republican Guard), the A14 closures are at the Maiorca exit and at the junctions connecting to the A17 at Casal do Raposo and Ferrestelo.
