This ancient Pagan festival, deeply tied to the Germanic goddess Eostre (from whom we get the word ‘Easter’), marks the moment when day and night are of equal length, signalling the return of warmth, fertility, and life. For those connected to the cycles of nature, Ostara is a powerful time to celebrate the turning of the seasons and embrace the energy of new beginnings.

The origins of Ostara can be found in early Pagan cultures that followed the changing seasons. Eostre, the goddess of fertility and dawn, was believed to bring back the spring with her presence, awakening the land and filling it with new life. Today, Ostara is a sacred time of growth and transformation.

As you are probably well aware, in Christianity, Easter also celebrates renewal with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It takes place on the first Sunday following the initial full moon after the spring equinox.

People celebrate with, amongst other things, easter eggs, which are an ancient symbol of new life and were associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb and resurrection.

Everywhere we look, there are signs that spring has come! From the lambs in the fields, to the cheeping of baby birds, the new shoots from bulbs, bright green leaves and blossom on the trees. The air is full of the scent of a new turn in the wheel of the year.

Renewal

With all this growth and renewal around us, it’s no wonder that this high-vibe energy starts to affect us too! Nature is vibrant, green and full of promise, as are we!

This time of year is a reminder that life is abundant and full of promise. It’s an opportunity for rebirth in ourselves, where we can address anything we want to change. It’s a perfect time to start new projects or do something you’ve always wanted to but haven’t had the courage. The energy of the Earth is surging and growing at this time and so anything we start now has a stronger chance of success. Spring carries the same energy as a new moon but lasts longer and gives us more opportunity to explore new ways of being and new practices and start new hobbies and interests.

Rebirth ritual

This is a purposeful way to connect with the energy of spring and honour this time of year.

You will need:

A candle

A plant pot filled with soil and drainage, suitable for planting seeds.

A few seeds

What to do

Start by lighting the candle and say, “may this burning candle cleanse me and remove all energy which is not needed”. Move the candle carefully around your body as you say this. (I usually just move it around my front, waist level up to face level).

Hold a handful of soil and say to yourself, “may the soil ground me and connect me to the heart of Mother Gaya”.

Seeds Represent Sewing the seeds of new intentions, so next hold the seeds and feel their potential. Say to yourself, “may my new life grow and flourish like these seeds.”

Plant the seeds in the soil.

(I’m using sweet peas in my ritual as I love their scent and colour, plus they’re easy to grow!)

Choose seeds which when grown will still fit the pot or plant out when the seedlings are strong enough.

State your intention, for example, “May the energy of Easter/ Ostara enable me to be reborn again, to connect with feelings of renewal as I move forward afresh”.
