The pensioner is believed to have been responsible for starting a fire which occurred on 24 March in scrubland in Vale Rabelho, in Guia, Albufeira.
The man reportedly has a criminal record for similar crimes.
The arrest was made following an investigation conducted by the Albufeira Public Prosecutor.
