According to GNR police, most of the complaints have originated in the Algarve from people visiting the region from elsewhere in the country.
Victims of scams are usually asked to pay deposits to secure their holiday accommodation, but upon arrival, discover they do not have anywhere to stay. Amounts people have lost vary from 200 to 2,000 euros.
