Between 2014 and 2018 the number of foreigners studying at a Postgraduate level in Portugal increased by ten percent. According to figures published by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, 23 percent of all Master’s students are non-nationals.

There was also an increase at an Undergraduate level, with students hailing from abroad accounting for almost 11 percent of all those studying at that level.

Beyond the cultural and academic benefits brought forth by a varied student population, foreign students also make a substantial contribution to universities and higher education institutes, since the fee cap of €1,068 is only applicable to Portuguese nationals and can be increased for all other students.
