According to the Associated Press, several objects have so far been recovered from the ship São José-Paquete de Africa which sank off the coast of Cape Town in 1794.

The objects from the slave ship are to be on a long-term loan to the Washington-based Smithsonian Museum from the Iziko Museums of South Africa.

About half of the people on board the ship died when it sank. According to the Smithsonian, others made it to shore but were sold back into slavery.
