In total 285,725 drivers and their vehicles were read by police radars, 5,350 of whom were found to be speeding.
Carried out between last Monday and Sunday, the operation involved 1,200 officers formed into 600 units located strategically throughout Portugal to control speed.
The operation was simultaneously carried out in other European countries.
It was promoted by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL), which comprises all European traffic police forces, represented in Portugal by the GNR.
In Portugal the units were positioned on hotspots where speeding is common, specifically on motorways and within towns.
Meanwhile, the GNR force has also detained 17 bikers following a weekend-long operation held lasr weekend and aimed at clamping down on motorbikes on Portugal’s roads. In total 3,074 bikes and their riders were inspected, and 11 of the 17 riders detained were taken in by police for not having a licence.
Three were detained for riding while being over the legal alcohol limit.
Again, around 1,200 officers took part in the nationwide exercise, which aimed to increase safety and raise awareness about responsible riding on Portugal’s roads.
