Biden wants to quadruple refugee intake in 2021

Joe Biden's government plans to admit 62,500 refugees in the next six months, four times the previous cap set by the previous US administration.

The Donald Trump Administration had set the number of refugees to be admitted at 15,000, but Biden, according to government sources heard by the AP, plans to quadruple the number while the current budget is in effect, until the end of September, and in 2022 it will double again it to 125 thousand.

According to the same sources, the goal of 125,000 refugees, previously announced by Biden, is at this stage considered unrealistic by the Administration, due to the constraints caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus and also the need to reset the refugee admission programme, which had been largely dismantled by the former executive.

The State Department confirmed that the admission quota review process has started, with a presidential report sent to Congress, where the measure will have to be debated.

The goal of admitting 125,000 refugees is higher than the 110,000 maximum set at the end of the term of former President Barack Obama.

The drop in the admission of refugees over the past 4 years has led to a cut in funding for resettlement support programmes, the closure of monitoring offices and the dismissal of their employees.
