The same source stated that the new Residential Structure for the Elderly and Day Care for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias is classified as “priority” by the municipality, being designed to accommodate 70 patients in a residential regime and support 20 in day care.

The Mayor of Castro Marim, Francisco Amaral (PSD), mentioned in the statement after the construction of the new nursing home for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias, the municipality will have “a model unit for the entire south of the country”, due to “its size and scope”.

“It is an infrastructure with a future, as the average longevity increases and 50 percent of people over 90 suffer from dementia”, justified the mayor, also highlighting “the strong contribution” that this unit will bring “to the local economy” and to “the creation of dozens of jobs, direct and indirect”.

The Castro Marim county said that the reception for the “70 patients with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in the inpatient regime and 20 in the day care regime” will be done with “three units of action”: one residential inpatient and day unit, one for the promotion of personal autonomy and intervention with families and the other for training and cooperation.

Castro Marim, in the district of Faro and located next to the border with Spain, is one of the counties in the region most affected by population aging and desertification of the territory.
