I recently had a chance to meet Scottish author John Reid over coffee with his lovely wife to discuss his book The Auction. This is the second book in the DCI Steve Burt Mysteries.

When John retired he had time to pursue his passion for writing and the character DCI Steve Burt was born. He is an ex Parachute Regiment Officer now a part of the Metropolitan Police.

It was interesting to understand John’s writing process and I found it insightful when he spoke about the characters writing their own story, not him.

We follow the flawed character Steve Burt, who has many personal demons. In his pursuit of justice he does not always follow the rules. In this book Steve is looking into the dangerous world of money laundering whilst trying to track down a serial killer who is murdering women and then discarding their bodies. There is mystery, intrigue, corruption, danger - all the elements needed to keep you on the edge of your seat. This case will test the DCI like no other.

The launch of the book sees John teaming up with the charity SENSE. They support people with complex disabilities. As a wonderful initiative the charity will receive a percentage of royalties from not only this book but the entire Steve Burt series.

John and his wife live in Lagos. He is currently working on the eighth book of the series so that is great news for fans!

I enjoyed the chat with John and to hear his vision for the rest of the series. I also thoroughly enjoyed the book and I look forward to reading the next one in the series. I can also see this story easily translated into a TV series as it has all the characteristics of a gripping show.
