The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.5 million guests and 7.5 million overnight stays in August, year-on-year increases of 35.6 percent and 47.6 percent respectively, with overnight stays from residents reaching a historic high.

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), "the levels reached in August 2021 were, however, lower than those observed in August 2019, with a decrease in the number of guests and overnight stays, by 23.6 percent and 22.1 percent, respectively”.

In August, the domestic “staycation” market contributed with 4.2 million overnight stays, “the highest monthly value on record”, and increased by 24.2 percent. The external markets, on the other hand, grew 94.5 percent and totalled 3.3 million overnight stays.

Compared to August 2019, there was a 22.6 percent growth in overnight stays from residents and a decrease of 46.9 percent in overnight stays from non-residents.

During the first eight months of the year, there was a year-on-year increase of 11.8 percent in total overnight stays, resulting from a 29.1 percent increase in residents and a 6.4 percent decrease in non-residents.

Compared to the same period in 2019, however, overnight stays decreased by 58.4 percent (-18.9 percent for residents and -75.6 percent for non-residents).

According to INE data, in August, 16.5 percent of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no movement of guests (20.4 percent in July).

By region, during August the Algarve registered 36.7 percent of overnight stays, followed by the Metropolitan Area (AM) of Lisbon (15.7 percent), the North (15.2 percent) and the Centre (12.2 percent).

With regard to income from tourist accommodation establishments, in August they reached €515.8 million in total and €410.2 million in relation to accommodation, which, compared to the same month of 2019, represents a decrease of 19.2 percent of total income and 19.3 percent in income from accommodation.

The average income per available room (RevPAR) was €71.4 in August (€40.2 in July) and the average income per occupied room (ADR) reached €115.8 (€98.7 in July).

In August 2019, RevPAR and ADR were €84.4 and €116.2, respectively.

Between January and August 2021, considering most types of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, camping and holiday camps and youth hostels), there were 8.8 million guests and 23.9 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 8.1 percent and 11.8 percent respectively.
