“We are seeing last-minute cancellations following the restrictions, due to the worsening of the pandemic. We continue to have reservations, but our forecasts, which were very optimistic for this New Year’s Eve, are not confirmed”, said the president of the Algarve Hotels and Touristic Enterprises Association (AHETA).
According to Elidérico Viegas, the new restrictions and the worsening of the pandemic have led to "many cancellations", especially by the Portuguese, who are the ones who most seek out the region at this time of year.
"Although there is still demand, the data we have now does not allow us to confirm the forecasts we had", said the official, expressing the hope that, throughout the week, there may be last minute reservations, in case there is a slowdown in the number of new cases.
Elidérico Viegas also recalled that more than 40% of the hotels and developments in the Algarve are currently closed, which was already the case, as it is the low tourist season.

Nearly all people in Portugal are vaccinated. The dominant omicron strain infects both vaccinated and unvaccinated people, but the symptoms are no more serious than the common cold. The government is once again panicking, imposing crippling and pointless lockdowns, and changing the rules so often that no one can keep track. I would not like to spend my vacation locked up in a hotel room, eating cold take out food from a paper box. And if I fail my COVID test when I am checking in to the hotel, will I be sleeping in the gutter? No thanks, I'll be back when Portugal calms down and reopens for enjoyable tourism.

Are you Hotel Business Professionals? What part about cancelations from people that don't want to be in a crowd and get sick don't you understand? Why were you even considering a NYE celebration. In good conscience YOU should have canceled your events. Does it matter to you if a lot of people get sick from your event and spread it around to others when they return home, must be the $$$? And as for even alluding to twice in the article that people are canceling because of the restrictions THAT'S BULL! They just don't want to get Covid, logical and smart. Algarve is stunning so why would you want your tourists ($$$) to remember it for an event you sponsored? Who runs these hotels, back to school!

More boosters and testing are not the answer. I forfeited a planned one-month trip to Portugal, where I'd also been thinking of retiring, starting mid December. I really like the place but its leaders seem to make decisions not in the interests of their country and long term Portugal, despite knowing some Portuguese, may not be the right choice, so I'm instead going to out coastal Bulgaria.
