The stage for the decisive meeting of the main European club competition has been changed for the third consecutive year, after Lisbon and Porto hosted the 2019/20 and 2020/21 finals, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in both cases to the detriment of Istanbul, Turkey.
A day after having “vehemently carried out the military invasion”, UEFA met the executive committee to assess the situation in Ukraine, deciding to withdraw from Russia the organisation of the Champions League final, scheduled for 28 May.
The stadium that would host the final in St Petersburg is named after energy giant Gazprom, one of UEFA's main sponsors since 2012.
