“On learning of the premature death of agent Fábio Guerra, the President of the Republic expressed his sadness and regret at the loss of a life in such tragic circumstances”, the Presidency of the Republic.

Agent Fábio Guerra, 27, died today (21 March) at the Hospital de São José, in Lisbon, due to “severe brain injuries” suffered as a result of an attack early Saturday morning outside a nightclub in the capital, confirmed the police.

“Agent Fábio Guerra will be remembered for his selflessness, courage and dedication to the service of others and public safety. The President of the Republic sends his deepest condolences to the family of agent Fábio Guerra, as well as to his friends and PSP professionals”, reads the message from the Presidency of the Republic.

Investigation

The PSP reported that “all steps are still underway, in coordination with the Judiciary Police, aimed at the identification and arrest of all the perpetrators of the aggressions, which resulted in the death” of agent Fábio Guerra after the incident which was recorded outside the Mome nightclub.

In a statement released on 19 March, the PSP said that the incident took place in the early hours of that day, at 6:30 am, "outside a nightlife establishment, on Avenida 24 de Julho", having started with mutual aggressions between several citizens.

According to the PSP, there were “four police officers, off duty, who immediately intervened, as was their legal obligation”, who ending up being violently attacked by one of the groups, made up of about 10 people. The other three officers who were attacked were discharged from hospital the following day.

Navy involvement

The Navy also announced that "two soldiers, under contract, from the Marines”, were involved in the incident.

The Navy said that it ordered the two soldiers to report to the respective unit to respond “to an internal investigation” and to be available to the authorities carrying out the investigations.
