“It was truly historic, especially with regard to exports, but there is still a great deal of promotion, protection and training work to be carried out to conquer new markets”, said the president of the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto (IVDP), Gilberto Igrejas, quoted in a statement.

According to data released by the public institute, total sales of Port and Douro wines reached, in 2021, “record values” of €600 million.

Gilberto Igrejas noted that “the national market, as a result of the decline in tourism, is experiencing a slight loss in Port wine” and stressed that “it is therefore urgent to captivate the Portuguese, reiterating the promotional focus on younger age groups”.
