In June this year, 10,156 deaths were reported, 217 fewer than in May (-2.1%), according to preliminary data from the INE, which point to an increase of 23.6% compared to June last year (plus 1,941 deaths).

Analysing deaths due to Covid-19, INE reveals that in June 2022 977 were registered, 108 more compared to May, representing 9.6% of total deaths.

Compared to June 2021, there was an increase of 901 deaths due to Covid-19, the figures released by the INE also indicates.

Births up

The data also point to a 1.5% increase in the number of births in the first five months of this year, which totalled 31,979, compared to the same period last year (31,504).

In April and May 2022, there were, respectively, 6,115 and 6,772 live births, corresponding to decreases of 3% (189 less) and 0.6% (38 less) compared to the same months of 2021.

In May 2022, the natural balance was minus 3,570, worsening compared to the same month of 2021, when it registered a value of minus 1,807.

In the first five months of 2022, the accumulated value of the natural balance was minus 21,672, showing a reduction in relation to the value observed in the same period of 2021 (-27,576).
