Shopping centres refusing to close early to save energy

This decision was taken due to fears of "transferring millions of Euros" to e-commerce at a time when the sector is still "recovering" from the effects of the pandemic.

According to Jornal de Negócios, Rodrigo Moita de Deus said that the Portuguese Shopping Centre Association (APCC) does not want shops to reduce opening hours to save energy, but is committed to "finding measures that reduce consumption, without reducing the competitiveness of retailers, especially in the face of online competition".

They are therefore looking for eco-friendly options, such as producing their own energy. However, he warns that it is necessary that "consumers are open to the new reality", as one of the alternatives is limiting air conditioning.

The APCC already has a working group to find "efficient and competitive" measures with the government.

So silly. e-commerce barely works in Portugal. There is no postal delivery; so many packages are stolen.

Disclaimer: I hate shopping centres, so only good if they facilitate my errands. If I were to pick a place to hang out, these wouldn´t be it because I don´t feel well if I stay too long in them. That said, for old ppl, though? And I mean “poor” old ppl…it´s a haven. I notice that during heatwaves they hang out at these places because they don´t have the conditions to bear this at home during the day. So by all means-this coming from a person who runs errands but doesn´t stay in these places too long-take away the only way many of our elderly endure harsh weather away from their “unprotected” homes (extremes hot/cold; inability to realistically foot the energy bill at home).
