The return of mid-century emigrants and the arrival of a foreign population have made Portugal the country with the highest proportion of pensions paid by other social security systems among over three dozen European states with common social protection mobility rules.

According to recent figures from Brussels, as reported by Jornal Económico, for every 100 pensions received in Portugal, 14 are paid by foreign entities.
